Trailers for Bikes

You know, when I used to ride motorcycle I coveted trailers. In a remote way that is, since I really didn’t want to drag a trailer along with me. I liked the freedom of the motorcycle, and with as little baggage as possible. Just hauling around a couple of saddlebags was more than what I really wanted but it really is difficult to get through a day without somewhere to store things. The biggest problem was what to do with a jacket in the heat of the day.

So what I really envied was the end result, the trailer at the campsite, especially when I saw the first example of a bike trailer that folded out into a two room tent with a bed and everything. I imagined traveling across this wide country of ours, setting up shop in one town after another, unhooking the trailer and using it as a base from which to explore a new state or city or mountainside.

Then life changed. Having children changes how you view the world. It changes your priorities. Now the bike trailers I covet are the ones that I can pull behind my manual two wheeler. The bicycle. The trailers I look at will never fold out into a tent, they will never be a base from which I can explore anything beyond the pleasures of being the center of the universe of a two year old.

I have my eye on trailers for bicycles that converts into a stroller. A bicycle seat really isn’t the same thing. It does screw up the balance of the ride to have all that weight up high, which reduces the enjoyment of the ride. Now with a trailer running along behind the bike flows as though it had no load at all, just a bit more drag. And there is the possibility of having a double trailer stroller so two children can ride along and enjoy the countryside with their parent together.

bikes with trailerWhen you can spend some time enjoying a ride through the country or around town and then park, convert the trailer into a stroller and walk or jog around town with them. It is nice not to have to choose between your passion and your children. Of course the children are the most important thing in the world, but there is more to life, and not always having to carve out time from a too busy life to enjoy a ride or a run is a simple joy that more than pays for itself in the pleasure of sharing health and happiness and the joy of sharing a lifestyle of physical effort and the rewards that that can bring.

Raising children is a heavy responsibility that brings with it concomitant joy. It can be tricky, I think, to grow them into the people that you would like them to live the type of life you would have for them. So the difference between trying to teach your children how to live healthy and happy and showing them with your actions just what that can add to your life both in years and in joy is something to be striven for.

And bicycle trailer/strollers are a simple solution to the problem of getting them started young. The earlier a thing starts the more likely it is to work its way into the life and lifestyle of your children as they grow. Okay. Enough soap box. Get out and enjoy your day.

Choosing Exercise

When it comes to getting in shape, the best exercise is the one you do. We have all seen the amazing bodies on the commercials for ‘Drive yourself to near death workout’ videos, and we all wish we could have one. But have you actually spent a few days trying to stay with those guys? If so, how long did you last.  A week? A month? 60 days?

We’ll bet good money that you never made it to the 90 day level. And then you feel guilty. Well don’t. You are not alone, we tried it and didn’t like it too. And so do a whole bunch of the people you see on the bus every day. They all tried and failed. So was it really a good workout to start with?  Not for you or me it wasn’t.

One of the hardest things to do when it comes to staying in shape is to find out just what it is that you will enjoy doing enough that you will stick with it. And when you are trying to find that thing, to not keep giving up when you fail. Move on to the next thing. It’s a process and each attempt is not a failure, it’s just another step towards your goal of becoming a life long healthy person.

Remember, when people are talking about something they are passionate about they tend to be all or nothing folk. They present their idea as if it is the only right way to do something. And this is true for almost all of them. It’s yoga, or aerobics, or running, or climbing. Or whatever. But really, why does it have to be any one of those things?
Perhaps designing the ultimate workout routine and the ultimate schedule is ideal, but we suspect not. Anything that keeps you active is a good thing, and it might be that a mix of different things is the best thing. At least that is what we have come to believe. That’s why we are going to be buying a new cruiser bicycle as soon as we can decide on exactly which one we want.

We have long thought that a bicycle was a very good way to get exercise, it can be as hard or as easy as you want on a given day, which isn’t something that you can say about a lot of exercise routines.  It is also an enjoyable way to get outside and experience nature. That said, the days of riding along head down on a road racer are gone. Nowadays a part of the riding experience really has to be the ability to appreciate our surroundings when we are out on a ride.  And you really have a hard time doing that with a road bikes configuration.

So one of these hybrids seems like it will fit the bill well. Allowing riding on a variety of the same terrains and more, with the option of taking a break and experiencing the outdoors at the same time as we improve our health.

On Contemplation And Health

There is a kind of wisdom in peace. Taking the time to really see around you, to take pleasure in the smallest of things. We truly believe that in peace and quiet contemplation you will find the basic components of health, both mental and physical.

contemplationHow often have you heard someone talk about their state of physical health and mention their resting heart rate. A low heart rate is almost a hallmark of good health. Is it coincidental that a quiet heart is also one of the  benefits of meditation? We think not. And meditation is also an underpinning of many health programs.

There is a connection between physical and mental health that is not much talked about. The best health will come with a combination of physical exercise, good eating habits, and daily meditation or some other form of quieting the mind.

We here are big believers in eating green (as it were). Of eating the types of foods that our ancestors might have been abe to scrounge. Not the ancestors that built the pyramids or Stonehenge. The ancestors that had to work hard every day to find what nature offered. This is not a vegetarian diet. Many of our ancestors hunted meat and existed on it during the times when the seasons, short as they were, left vegetation unavailable.

We also believe that while some training with heavy weight is important to build some minimum muscle mass, some form of cardiovascular exercise is critical as well, Both for heart health and for keeping long lean muscles, and working on that slow heart rate. For many people, this can involve running, but when the joints begin to fail a good hard workout on a bicycle will do the trick. It also has the advantage of being one of the few ways that a person can see big pieces of the world.

The last component is, for many of us, the hardest. Spending some time learning to quiet your mind can have benefits far beyond the aura of serenity that you project on the world. It is hard to explain just how much we think that travelling through life calmly can benefit every phase of your life. Almost by definition being able to control stress in your life will have huge benefits for longevity and health.

Be at peace. Contemplate the world. Live as one
