The Meguro S3 is an updated version of the Standard Meguro 250cc single. It has several improvements in
components and was equipped with turn signals. While most US machines of the era were did not have turn
indicators, it is quite common in Japanese machines starting in 1958. It, like its younger brother the S2,
is not a light machine tipping the scales at over 400 lbs. It has a standard telescoping front fork and a
plunger style rear suspension.
It sports a 3 speed transmission, shifting on the right side. The transmission is a rotary shift model allowing the rider to shift from third, directly into first. Great at a stop light, but you are in for quite a shock if you forget that you are in third and shift one time too many. These transmissions must have been built very well to hold up to this abuse.
This machine was imported from Japan after purchase from a private collector. It original with some paint
touch up on the top of the tank and a few other places. The machine has nearly 60,000 km on the clock showing
some significant use. It starts on the first or second kick, smokes a little when cold but otherwise runs
well and is a blast to ride.
Meguro History
Meguro motorcycles were not exported from Japan until after its acquisition by Kawasaki Heavy Industries
in 1960/61. The brand is one of the oldest in Japan starting in the late 1920’s and continuing until
purchased by Kawasaki. Meguro was the first Japanese motorcycle manufacturer to produce every component
of a complete motorcycle. The other early manufacturers purchased component parts from Japan and abroad
and assembled machines.
This Machine is not scheduled for restoration but will be cleaned, used and left as an accurate example of these early machines.
